The Council has successfully marshaled the resources to complete two assessments (watershed and fish barrier) and implement a series of restoration projects; we are planning to move our efforts to the next level of scientific rigor to do a comprehensive evaluation of watershed conditions. The Council is looking towards planning and implementing projects that have large-scale impacts on the watershed. We continue to seek the resources to conduct both baseline studies of areas in anticipation of these projects, and status and trends studies of changes in the watershed over time.
In order to get a full picture of watershed conditions, the council has set up monitoring sites throughout the watershed, and is monitoring these sites for three years (2008-2010). Each site is monitored for water quality parameters (DO, pH, turbidity, conductivity, nitrate and phosphorus), temperature, and basic site conditions such as canopy cover, vegetative community compositions, and observations of in-stream conditions. Basic macro invertebrate sampling was taken at select sites within identified salmonid refugia areas. Total coliform and E. coli samples are taken at select sites with potential point or non point source contamination. The Council works with interns, volunteers, and school groups to collect the site information. School groups and volunteers have adopted specific areas of the watershed and Council staff covers the rest of the sites. Council staff works with agency staff from the Oregon DEQ to calibrate equipment and conduct quality control of collection techniques.
