The term watershed describes an area of land where water from rain, melting snow or ice drains downhill into a body of water. Streams and creeks form as water flows downhill, becoming progressively larger as water moves to the lowest point in the watershed.  At the lowest point of the watershed are wetlands, estuaries, lakes and rivers.

Watershed boundaries follow major ridge lines and channels, and meet at the bottom where water flows out of the watershed. These ridge lines are also the boundaries between watersheds. Watershed boundaries are easily seen using topographic maps that show physical features of the land such as hills, valleys, basins, ridges and channels.

The Scappoose Bay Watershed comprises approximately 85,000 acres.  It includes the main stem and tributaries of North and South Scappoose Creeks, Milton Creek, Honeyman Creek, and McNulty Creek, as well as several other smaller streams. Scappoose Bay, a unique fresh water tidal estuary, is the focal point of this complex system which provides fresh, clean water to its human residents, and to a diverse population of plants, fish, wildlife, birds and amphibians.
